There are more than 250 UN Clubs and 30 UN Chapters in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. The UN clubs and UN Chapters inform and create discussion about UN issues for young people.
UN Clubs are clubs formed by youth inside schools (mainly secondary students) and UN Chapters are Clubs which are at University level. The UN clubs and UN Chapters are open to students who are interested in learning about the work of the United Nations and international issues such as environment, poverty eradication, culture of peace, human rights, eradication of diseases and drug control.
In Tanzania the UN Clubs are coordinated by the UN Clubs Tanzania Network (UNCTN). UNCTN was established in 2006. The UNCTN is a network/ program facilitated by the Youth United Nations Association (YUNA) of Tanzania. Funding and support is provided by UNA Tanzania and United Nations Information Centre (UNIC). In coordination with UNCTN/YUNA and UNIC, a teacher plans and directs the club's activities, which may include educational workshops, roundtables, video screenings, exhibits, or competitions (essay writing, painting and drawing, photography, etc.).The UN club members also benefit from the collections and multimedia Services of UNIC’s libraly, which is based in Dar es Salaam.
There are more than 250 UN Clubs and 30 UN Chapters almost in all Regions in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. The UN Clubs offer students opportunities to plan and actively participate in after school activities about UN issues and other international issues.
UN Clubs and UN Chapters do the following things:
- Dissemination of UN information
- Enhance education through teaching of UN and other international issues
- Encourage students to participate in discussions and events
- Promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
- Participate in various training, workshops and conferences (for example: the Model UN, EARAMUN )
- Improving students skills (negotiating, presentation etc) and confidence
- Contact UNCTN (see below)
- Organise a group of at least 10 students
- Bring your school administration on board – inform them about your intention to start an UN club
- Choose and request a teacher to be the Club’s Patron/Matron
- Get in touch with YUNA and ask for an registration form
- Register your members and send in the registration form and pay the small member fee to YUNA
- You will receive ID cards for all your members and an official induction
