Youth of United Nations Association (YUNA)

Youth of United Nations Association (YUNA) informs about UN issues to young people.

Youth of United Nations Association (YUNA) of Tanzania is a youth run non-for-profit, NGO working to promote the purposes and principles of the United Nations amongst young people of Tanzania. With more than 5000 members, YUNA Tanzania has generated a great enthusiasm amongst young people.

 

YUNA Tanzania was established in 1996, as a youth wing of the UNA Tanzania, and registered under the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2005 as an NGO. YUNA and UNA colloborate closely together.

 

YUNA Activities/Programmes:

  • Since 1997, YUNA has facilitated the Tanzania Model United Nations (TMUN).  More than 2000 students have taken part in the process.
  • YUNA has, together with UNA Tanzania, Uganda and YUNA Kenya, coordinated the Eastern Africa Regional Model United Nations (EARMUN) 3 times since 2006.
  • YUNA has implemented the Youth Involvement and Participation (YIP) project under the patronage of the African Youth Alliance (AYA) project (www.ayaonline.org). It was coordinated by UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the Program for Appropriate Technologies in Health (PATH) and Pathfinder International. Funding came from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • YUNA took part in the Helsinki Process by being part of the Citizens' Global Platform (CGP) with UNA Tanzania, YUNA’s members took part in a national opinion gathering process towards the initiative.
  • In partnership with Tanzania Youth Vision Association (TYVA), YUNA drafted a National Youth Agenda and led the process towards the its popularization in the run up to the 2005 National General Elections.
  • YUNA is running the UN Club Programme in Secondary Schools in Tanzania. The aim is to promote the work of the UN amongst students.  To-date, YUNA Tanzania maintains UN Club Members in over 50 schools across Tanzania with over 7000 members. Arusha, Moshi, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and Zanzibar boast the most active club-ship in this programme.
  • YUNA Tanzania is an active participant in the Great Lakes Peace Process. The process was initiated after the signing of the Peace Pact in Nairobi December 2006, the process involved 11 Great Lakes African countries, Tanzania being one of them. A parallel youth process took shape at the very beginning and YUNA Tanzania became the Tanzania youth representative in that process.
