Past Activities Undertaken by the UNA Tanzania

  • 1997/1999 – UNA – Tanzania was the Secretariat for the Observance of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, coordinating the activities of some 60 NGOs, funded by DANIDA.
  • 1998 UNA held a Workshop on “UN Reform” –sponsored by UNDP country office.
  • 1998/2000 - coordinated NGO’s network for the establishment of an independent Human Rights Commission
  • Rights Contained in International Human Rights Instruments and the Reporting Obligations of Governments - March 31-3 April 1998, supported by FINNIDA. Some 60 NGOs participated. The resource person came from UNA-UK.
  • ILO Conventions and Fundamental Human Rights – June 1998, supported by ILO Country Office. Some 60 NGOs representatives participated. The resource person came from ILO Country Office in Ethiopia.
  • 1999 mounted an intensive publicity of the stakeholders’ recommendations on the Independent Human Rights Commission.  This process was undertaken with the kind support of CIDA,
  • January 2000, supported by HIVOS of the Netherlands. UNA –Tanzania, lead a team of 10 NGOs to lobby Parliament for the establishment of the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance which is now operational since July 2001.
  • June 2000 – March 2001 - Facilitator for the for the 2000 elections, a project funded by a “basket” of 12 donors, led by DANIDA. Under the coordination of UNA –Tanzania, the Media Council, TAMWA, MISA-Tanzania, undertook the project. ARTICLE XIX of UK was the international consultant.
  • The overall objective of the project was to contribute to the achievement of free and fair elections in the year 2000 by encouraging the media, both public and private, to report the electoral process fairly, accurately and in a balanced manner.
  • April – July 2001: Facilitator for the Development of a New Media Policy for Tanzania, funded by DANIDA. The purpose of the project was to facilitate stakeholder inputs in the process of drafting a new Tanzania media policy, expected to facilitate the functioning of a free, independent and responsible media. The project was undertaken in collaboration with TAMWA, Media Council, AJM, TUJ, MISA-Tanzania and ARTICLE XIX of UK.
