MDGs Awareness Campaign in Mwanza 18th to 22nd July 2011

In implementing the MDGs project in Nyamagana District in Mwanza Region in the month of July; several activities were done according to the work plan to equip the targeted group that is local government leaders, Civil Society Organization and Students in Secondary school and higher learning institutions.

Our main tasks or activities were to meet the full council of Nyamagana District so that we could introduce ourselves as United Nations Association of Tanzania, what we do and equip them with MDGs knowledge and see how we could work together towards implementing the MDGs awareness in their said Wards. We managed to meet all the 17 councilors and the Assistant Municipal Director and the Assistant Mayor on 19th July 2011.We had a good and open discussion whereby we exchanged different ideas and addressed some of the challenges the local leaders are faced with and they all agreed to do their part to ensure Tanzania meets its promise of achieving the MDGs by 2015.

The Civil Society meeting was held on 20th of July 2011, and with these group we aimed at forming an Advocacy plan that would involve activities to be done to achieve MDGs awareness in the region and also to act as a link between United Nations Association of Tanzania and the local government leaders in achieving MDGs awareness.Eight taskforce members who had been chosen after the network meeting which had been held in 2010 were present, at the end of the day an advocacy plan was formed.

On 19th to 21st of July while in Mwanza region we had a mandate of activating different UN Clubs and impact the said students with MDGs knowledge. We managed to visit 7 schools in Nyamagana District to implement the said tasks. Most of the students turned out to know what MDGs were but only at a basic level not keenly but they promised to work extra hard to learn more about MDGs and to play their part to ensure that the government does keep its promise of 2015 because Youths voices play the biggest part to contribute to change in any society.
