Our Experience so Far

UNA Tanzania has been operational for more than 3 decades. We are fortunate to have evolved in the civil society community, with wealth of experiences, lessons and achievements to note. Our most productive tenure began in 1996 and the following are some of the activities we have implemented so far.


2006-2009; Eastern Africa Regional Model United Nations:

UNA Tanzania, in collaboration with the youth of UNA Tanzania, UNA Uganda and UN Youth Association of Kenya, has been organized the Eastern Africa Regional Modal United Nations. The gathering brings together young people from universities, youth groups and organizations in Eastern Africa Countries. The first two EARMUNs were organized in and took place in Nairobi Kenya, whilst the third took place in Arusha Tanzania and fourth in Kampala Uganda.


2005-2008; Lake Victoria Initiative:

Lake Victoria project was implemented in order to raise awareness of the MDGs and to help stakeholders to define their role in implementing the MDGs.The project was implemented by three countries surrounding Lake Victoria-Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The project implemented in collaboration with UNA Sweden.


2006-2010; Exchange Program:

Exchange program is implemented by involving members of UNAs of Uganda, Norway and Tanzania, so as to share the experiences in implementing the UN mandate with particular reference to the MDGs.UNA Norway sends exchange participants to the UNA Tanzania and Uganda and in turn, UNA Norway receives participants form UNA Uganda and Tanzania. The exchange is a five year program.


July 2005-Jan 2006; Media Election Monitoring:

UNA was the facilitator for the Media Election Monitoring project for 2005 elections; a project funded by a “basket” of donors, led by DFID and administered by UNDP.The media monitoring process involved a team of three organizations; UNA-Tanzania, TAMWA and MISA –Tanzania. CREDO of the United Kingdom was the International Consultant. The overall objective of the project was to contribute to the achievement of free and fair elections in the year 2005 by encouraging the media, both public and private, to report the electoral process fairly, accurately and in a balanced manner.


April-July 2001; Media Election Monitoring:

UNA Tanzania was a facilitator for the development of a New Media Policy for Tanzania, funded by Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).The purpose of the project was to facilitate stakeholders inputs in the process of drafting a new Tanzania Media Policy, which was expected to facilitate the functioning of a free, independent and responsible media T he project was undertaken in collaboration with TAMWA, Media Council, AJM, TUJ, MISA-Tanzania and ARTICLE XIX of the United Kingdom.


June 2000-March 2001; Media Election Monitoring:

UNA Tanzania was a facilitator for the Media Election Monitoring project for the 2000 elections, a project funded by a basket of 12 donors led by DANIDA. Project implementation was coordinated by UNA Tanzania, The Media Council, TAMWA and MISA-Tanzania. ARTICLE XIX of UK was the International Consultant. The Overall of the project was to contribute to the achievement of free and fair elections in the year 2000 by encouraging the media, both public and private, to report the electoral process fairly, accurately and in a balanced manner.


January 2000; Establishment of the Tanzania Commission for Human Rights:

Supported by HIVOS of the Netherlands, UNA-Tanzania led a team of 10 NGOs to lobby parliament for the establishment of the commission for Human Rights and Good G governance, which has been operational since 2001.


1999; Establishment of the Tanzania Commission for Human Rights:

Mounted an intensive publicity of the stakeholders recommendations on the independent Human Rights Commission. This process was undertaken with the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
